Digestive Health - Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition that causes inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the large intestine and rectum. There are different types of ulcerative colitis depending on its location.

The symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis can vary depending on location and severity. Symptoms may be similar to Crohn’s Disease and may include:
• Diarrhea with blood or mucous
• Abdominal pain and cramping
• Rectal pain
• Fatigue
• Weight loss
• Failure to thrive (children)

Testing & Treatment

To confirm the diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis, blood tests, stool testing, imaging, and endoscopic procedures (with tissue biopsy) may be recommended. Conventional treatment of Ulcerative Colitis is similar to Crohn’s Disease, which involve the use of medications that decrease the body’s inflammatory response. This can range from corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and biologics. In severe cases, surgery, where the colon and rectum are removed, may be indicated.

A Naturopathic Doctor may recommend additional tests to shed further light into the case. One possible test recommendation may be comprehensive stool testing, which can assess the gut’s bacteria distribution, the presence of yeast or pathological bacteria, and digestive factors. Another test that may be recommended is an IgG Food sensitivity test to uncover possible food-related contributors to inflammation.

Naturopathic care can be effective at minimizing symptoms and lengthening the time between flare-ups. Digestive restoration is the key when it comes to the Naturopathic approach to Ulcerative Colitis. With the guidance of test results, the treatment plan will aim to:
• Remove bad bacteria and pathogens
• Reinnoculate the system with good bacteria and intestinal factors
• Restore proper digestive function
• Replenish the body with nutrients to support healing and optimal function
