Skin Deep: The Hidden Dangers of Body Care Products

An average person uses 12 personal care products a day and exposes themselves to a cocktail of synthetic chemicals. Since the skin has the ability to absorb and body tissue has the ability to store, chemicals can add up in our bodies. Such chemicals are found in many commonly used body care products including soaps, deodorants, shampoos, skin/body/hand creams, make-up etc.

One look at the ingredient list of any general body care product should set off warning bells – phthalates, parabens, aluminum salts, tricolosan and synthetic fragrances, to name a few. Individually, each of these chemicals has been shown to negatively affect the reproductive system, neurological system and even promote cancer growth. The potential health impact of being exposed to many of these chemicals on a daily basis is something every Canadian should be concerned about.

Luckily, there are now more ‘healthier’ options than ever. A browse through the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database will give you lots of safe and effective options. Speak to one of our doctors at Vive Health to learn how to avoid and detoxify your bodies from these chemicals, and what our recommendations are for safer body care product options.

Here’s an interesting and informative video on Toxic Chemicals in Your Personal Care Products. Enjoy!
