Mold Illness

Mold illness is far more common than most people realize. Its under-recognition often stems from the complexity of vague symptoms, which can vary significantly from person to person, and the unfamiliarity with proper diagnostic tools. While mold is virtually everywhere, most individuals can tolerate low-level exposure. However, those with compromised immune systems or under chronic stress may become particularly vulnerable to airborne mold toxins. Dr. Shelby Garn explains:

Today, we’re exposed to over 300,000 chemicals, all of which place a burden on the body. For some, mold becomes the tipping point—the final straw pushing the immune system beyond its capacity. Mold thrives in damp, water-damaged environments, often hiding behind walls or under floors. When disturbed, it releases spores and toxic by-products called mycotoxins. These mycotoxins can enter the body through the airways, skin, gut, or eyes and are capable of colonizing within us. While some individuals efficiently detoxify and recover, others accumulate these toxins, leading to a complex, chronic condition known as mold toxicity.

As Naturopathic Doctors, we begin to suspect mold involvement based on a patient’s clinical presentation—even if it looks different from case to case. Many mold illness patients have been through the wringer of the conventional medical system. Despite feeling unwell, their lab results often appear “normal.” They may have moments of clarity or energy, but more often they’re fatigued, inflamed, and frustrated. Symptoms we commonly see include chronic fatigue, brain fog, migraines or persistent headaches, unexplained pain, chronic sinus issues, temperature dysregulation, and muscle weakness—especially in the context of known or suspected mold exposure. It’s important to note that active mold exposure isn’t always necessary; past exposure can be enough to trigger long-term effects.

If you resonate with these symptoms and feel like you’ve been overlooked or dismissed despite persistent health struggles, it might be time to consider mold as a hidden culprit. At our clinic, we have the tools to identify and address complex, often-overlooked conditions like mold illness with a compassionate, root-cause approach. Through thorough assessment and targeted naturopathic care, we help our patients regain clarity, energy, and resilience. You don’t have to keep pushing through—there is a path forward, and we’re here to support you.
